Misschien wel de moeilijkste wedstrijd om je als team voor te motiveren, de troostfinale. Gastheer PSV en het team van voormalig PSV-trainer Tim Wolf, Club Brugge, hebben de ‘eer’ om deze wedstrijd te spelen.

Dat het een lastige wedstrijd is, blijkt wel uit de beginfase. Het spel is van een minder niveau dan wat we de afgelopen dagen van deze teams hebben gezien. Het is Club Brugge dat al in de eerste minuut aan de leiding komt. Het is Jakke van Britsom die de Belgische formatie op 1-0 schiet.

In de zevende minuut doet PSV wat terug, en hoe. Het is Liam van Nistelrooij, die met een knappe hakbal de gelijkmaker scoort.
Gedurende de rest van de eerste helft golft het spel wat op en neer, zonder dat het tot echt grote kansen leidt. Daardoor is 1-1 een logische ruststand.
In de 24e minuut is het wederom Jakke van Britsom die het net vindt voor Club Brugge. Slordig verdedigen aan PSV-zijde zorgt ervoor dat de Belg met een droog schot voor de 2-1 kan zorgen. Drie minuten later is het wederom slordig balverlies in de verdediging van PSV; Club Brugge maakt daar dankbaar gebruik van via Amengai, die de bal rustig binnen schuift.

Een paar minuten later is het dezelfde Amengai die de voorsprong voor Club Brugge vergroot naar 4-1. Zijn inzet wordt in eerste instantie nog gekeerd op de doellijn, maar hij krijgt de bal tegen zich aangeschoten, waardoor deze alsnog in het doel belandt. In de allerlaatste seconde is het McDonnell die de eindstand op 5-1 brengt.

Door dit resultaat sluit Club Brugge het toernooi af met een derde plek, PSV moet het, na de winst in de afgelopen twee jaren, deze editie met de vierde plek doen.

Perhaps the hardest match to get motivated for as a team: the consolation final. Hosts PSV and Club Brugge—coached by former PSV trainer Tim Wolf—had the “honor” of contesting this battle for third place.

The difficulty of the occasion was evident in the opening phase. The level of play was noticeably lower than what both teams had shown in previous days. Club Brugge took the lead in the very first minute, with Jakke Van Britsom firing the Belgian side ahead 1–0.

In the seventh minute, PSV responded in style. Liam van Nistelrooij scored the equalizer with a clever backheel finish.

The rest of the first half saw the game ebb and flow, but neither side created any major chances. A 1–1 scoreline at halftime felt fair.

In the 24th minute, it was again Jakke Van Britsom who found the net for Club Brugge. Sloppy defending from PSV allowed the Belgian forward to make it 2–1 with a composed strike. Just three minutes later, another defensive error from PSV led to a third goal—this time calmly slotted in by Naïm Amengai.

Moments later, Amengai struck again to extend the lead to 4–1. His initial effort was cleared off the line, but the rebound deflected off him and rolled into the net. In the dying seconds of the match, Grady McDonnell sealed the final score at 5–1.

With this result, Club Brugge finishes the tournament in third place. PSV, winners of the previous two editions, must settle for fourth this time around.
