Atlético Madrid were last year’s runner-up. How are they doing this year? Together with analyst Carlos Rodriguez, we take a look at his perspective.

Atlético Madrid’s start has been excellent. After one draw, they followed up with two victories. What does Carlos think about this?
“I think it’s been a good tournament so far. Yes, we will try to go far in the tournament. Today we aim to win both matches, and then we will try to win the next match, the semifinal against Club Brugge.”

You were the runner-up last year. So the biggest achievement you can reach now is winning the trophy.
“Yes, the next step this year is to win the final. But the next step is first to win the semifinal against a difficult opponent.”

Do you see progress in this tournament in terms of football, or are you playing at the level you normally do?
“Well, we know we’re in pre-season. We know we will grow during the first matches. Especially in pre-season, so that we’re ready when the real season begins.”

What are the expectations for tomorrow? As mentioned before, you were last year’s runner-up.
“Atlético Madrid is a very competitive team in Europe. And we will try to win the cup. But as I said, the next match is the most important for us. And then we will try to win that match. And afterwards, if we win, we’ll go for the trophy.”

Which new rule introduced here at the tournament do you think improves the game the most?
“For example, I really like replacing throw-ins with dribbling. Because it makes the game very dynamic. The pace of the matches is therefore also higher.
In addition to the tempo of the game, we also know that the players get more tired during the matches than in normal games. And not only that… I think it’s also more entertaining for the spectators.
There is one rule I’m not a fan of. For example, I don’t like the yellow card rule. Because sometimes players need to commit a foul for the sake of the team. You have to think more about it. Players also can’t play freely. You get a situation like: I can’t make a hard foul because then I’ll be sent off.”

Is there anything else you’d like to share about the tournament or Atlético Madrid?
“The Otten Innovation Cup is a very well-organized tournament. The opponents are of a high level, and they show that on the pitch.
For us, it’s good to play against big and strong opponents with a UEFA Champions League standard. And we want to raise our level to that standard. Then we’ll be ready for our matches in the UEFA Youth League.”
