SL Benfica is a familiar participant in the Otten Cup. Last year they finished fourth, and they also took part in the ‘centennial’ edition in 2013, celebrating 100 years of PSV.

This year, SL Benfica started the tournament with a match against PSV Eindhoven. Together with Martin Vasconcelos, we look back at the game and ahead to what the tournament may still bring them.

Before the match even started, you had certain rituals. Can you tell us exactly what you did and why?
“It’s our tradition and an important part of the club’s culture. Before the game, we shake hands not only with the opposing team’s outfield players but also with their entire bench. We also make a deep bow to the crowd that has come to watch the match.”

What did you think of your own performance in this first Otten Cup match?
“We conceded a penalty early in the game, which is, of course, not the best way to start. As the match went on, we grew into it more and more.
Halfway through, we even hit the crossbar. We tried to take control of the game and managed to score the equalizer. Unfortunately, in the final minutes, we conceded two more goals. That’s unfortunate. Tomorrow we have two more matches, and we are ready for them.”

What are your expectations for the Otten Cup tournament?
“To reach the final. Benfica is always one of the best teams, so our goal is to achieve good results tomorrow and make it to the final.”
